QNAP TS-869-PRO-US Intel Atom D2700 2.13GHz/ 1GB RAM/ 2GbE/ 8SATA3/ 2eSATA/ USB3.0/ 8-Bay Tower Turbo NAS Server for SMBsQnap Intel Atom D2700 2.13GHz/ 1GB RAM/ 2GbE/ 8SATA3/ 2eSATA/ USB3.0/ 8-Bay Tower Turbo NAS Server for SMBs (TS-869-PRO-US) Review
First of all; if you are considering upgrading your 859 to this model:- The eSATA connector on the 859 does not exist on the 869. The USB 3.0 connector took it's place, however USB 3.0 support (at this moment) is not working all that well in the current firmware version.
- The higher clock speed of the 869 CPU is making the NAS slightly more responsive though, but I'm not sure if that would be worth the upgrade.
- The ability to install up to 3Gb RAM is nice, but I have yet to see the advantage of it.
As with all QNAP NAS devices, this is a great NAS and offers a boat load of functionality.
I used Western Digital green drives (lower RPM, less heat, and less power consumption) - be aware though that I used the EZRX model (Western Digital Caviar Green 3 TB SATA III 64 MB Cache Bare/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD30EZRX), and not the problematic EARS drives! The advantage is that your NAS stays cooler, runs very quiet, and you will not really see a performance hit (vs. 7200 RPM drives).
My NAS stands pretty much next to my workstation and I really have to pay attention to hear it.
I know this NAS sounds expensive, at least I had to think about it for a while since it seems a lot of money, but I have not had a single moment of regret. I just love this QNAP!
Also; if you consider a QNAP, please pick an Intel based model, skip the ARM models since quite a few QPKG packages (free functionality extensions) lack an ARM version (or it takes a while before it becomes available).
