Micca EP950 1080p 3D Digital Media Player with Gigabit Network, USB 3.0, and 3.5" HDD Drive Bay (Realtek 1186) Review

I went through quite a few media players recently. Almost gave up on idea of finding the one that plays full HD rips flawlessly. The perfect player for me would be one that is reasonably priced and plays direct (m2ts) HD rip with 24p and HD audio over network from NAS, 3D is welcome too. 1185 based players were close, but were dropping audio during playback, occasionally. Popcorn Hour A-300 was horrible bug fested player. Dune HD TV-101 was almost there, but could not hold the candle with HD Audio and does not play DivX encoded video.

This player based on 1186 Realtek chip and handles full HD video and HD audio flawlessly:
24p - check
Audio sync - check
TrueHD - check
DTS-HD - check
Subtitles -check
3D-SBS/TOB - check (activate from player popup menu during playback, once in 3D - player's playback menu and info popups would work in 3D mode)
3D-SBS/TOB SRT subtitles - check
SMB shares - check
NFS shares - check
UPNP streaming - check

It plays iso and BD folder fine. Menus sometimes not shown - plays movie straight.

I tried 3D iso - some will show menu, some not. You can configure player to prompt for iso playback mode. "Direct play" plays 3D movie version correctly on every iso I tried so far. When "BD Lite" or "BD 1.0" used it may not show 3D movie for playback or just plays 3D movie straight. TV switched to 3D mode automatically. I am sure there will be few 3D bugs there, but it is not critical for me. Besides, my preferred method is "Direct play" and it works correctly.

As far as non 3D player - it works flawlessly and quite impressive for brand new product, just released . No fw updates yet published, but I feel like not updating fw, because I do not have any issues yet.

Thanks to Realtek and Micca for making it available. Job well done!

At the moment, this player will wipe floor with the likes of Dune-HD or Popcorn Hour. Not to mention full 3D support.

Time has come to retire WDTV HD Live. It took a while, WDTV is quite a player, but stable only with older fw 1.03.49 and older... With WDTV, it gets more and more crippled as a player with every fw update.

Issues found:
1) Rare audio dropouts with DTS-768Kbps audio tracks. It was present in earlier Realtek based players as well. This is very rarely used DTS bit rate, usually present in SkyHD movies. The remedy is simple - just convert it to more common DTS-1536Kbps and problem solved.
2) Some times it takes a few tries to power on the unit from remote. It works ok, but with very short power button press on remote. Looks more like a jitter, long press would turn unit on and then immediately off, so it looks like unit never turned on. This is being like this for many Realtek based players. Front panel on/off touch button works fine all the time.
3) Some AVC BD rips could cause a micro stutter in 24P mode, disabling 24P mode corrects the issue.
4) Only one movie with DTS-HD Master causes micro audio drops every 10 mins or so (nothing special about this movie, may be audio encoding issue, not the player). Remediation: Set "Deep Color"=off. I consider it as useless option anyway. I never encountered movie encoded with more than 8-bit color, increasing HDMI data bandwidth by 25/50% with no benefits.

Note, it is "micro" issues, most folks may not even notice it.

Still, very small issue considering product is just released.

Good Luck!

Product Description

By utilizing the most powerful PS/2 buffer-system ever created for a gaming keyboard, SteelSeries 7G redefines "anti-ghosting" by supporting as many simultaneous key presses as there are keys on the keyboard. The keyboard features both PS/2 and USB connectors. The use of PS/2 combined with a gold-plated USB connector and 18K gold-plated mechanical switches, means that SteelSeries 7G improves your ability to obtain more Actions Per Minute than any other keyboard in the world. It features gaming grade response times and more than six times the durability of a traditional keyboard.

SteelSeries 7G Gaming Keyboard Review

I'm a keyboard nut. I've purchased and used every keyboard that Microsoft sells as well as several major Logitech keyboards. Mavis Beacon and various websites rate me at 180wpm+. I spend 9 hours a day at work on a keyboard and the rest of my free time at home on a keyboard (gaming, WoW, Eve-Online, etc...).

When I got this shipped from Amazon - several keys had "popped" off during shipping (a rough shipping no doubt). They slid back on without a problem and they don't fall off even if I try to shake them off. Just not something I'd expect from a $120 keyboard (keys falling off during shipping). Might be a positive note for those of you that like to re-arrange your keyboard to a DEVORAK layout like my co-worker.

When I first plugged this keyboard in, my computer was off. When I booted up the keyboard was not recognized. Solution? Boot up into Windows, log in *then* plug in the keyboard. After that, the keyboard is recognized during bootup. This is due to the fact that I'm using the PS2 to USB converter.

First off, after unpacking, this keyboard is extremely heavy. I like this because cheap plastic keyboards slide all over as I type on them. The keyboard does not have any feet in back but the design build of the keyboard has a slight raise in the back - which I find very comfortable. The keypress is not "long" like all the other online reviews I've read. Maybe it is if you are using a laptop. The normal Dell keyboards have a longer keypress in my opinion. When you begin to type on this keyboard you'll note how amazingly easy it is to type. There is absolutely no resistance to keypress even if you hit a key from the side like some keyboards I've used. The key rebound is solid and provides great "tactile feedback." Also, the sound of the keys is a little different. Yes, the keypress noise is loud. Another note - keypress is registered about half way through allowing for some seriously fast typing when you want to go full speed. Overall, it has been a very positive experience typing on this keyboard. I'm trying to find any excuse to type because I like the keyboard so much.

The LCD lights for Num, Caps, and Scroll are incredibly bright white LED lights that will blind you if you look at them too long. However, that is only the case if you look at them directly above them - from where you are typing - the light is perfectly fine. I really enjoy the bright white light because I can detect if I have a key on out of the corner of my eye instead of looking down and wondering if I have the num lock key on or not.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, this keyboard rocks. I definitely recommend it to friends who want to enjoy a good quality keyboard.

Pros:
1. Solid build - you'd have to try hard to break this.
2. Ease of keypress allowing for some really fast wpm speeds.
3. 50 million rated keypress - this thing won't be dying anytime soon.
4. USB ports and headphone jacks right at your finger tips - no more ducking under your desk and fiddling with wires to connect your headset anymore. (I have a USB Creative headset).

Cons:
1. The "Windows" key is on the right side only. The Left side key is actually a SteelKeys function key that allows you to do music controls. This may bother some but I found it easy to adapt.
2. When shipped 1 day air - keys were popped off the keyboard - not something you expect from a $120 keyboard - however, placing them back on the keyboard = everything was ok.

Dell 1610HD Value Series Projector Review

Purchased this to use with my new Dell XPS laptop. The laptop doesn't have VGA output, so I purchased an adaptor cord to connect the Micro Display Port on the laptop to the VGA input on the projector (Apple brand, but Best Buy also carries another, slightly cheaper brand). No problems with displaying a Power Point show including both slides and video made on Windows Movie Maker. I haven't had the chance to fiddle with all of the fine tuning on the projector, but it works well right out of the box. Make sure that you get the cord adaptor when you buy the projector. I'm pleased with the weight, lighter than I'd expected; it's lighter than the laptop.

ViewSonic VT2405LED 24-Inch 1080p60 Hz Commercial HDTV Featuring "Edge White" Low Power LED Panel Technology - Black Review

I am using this TV in a bedroom to watch TV shows. I do not do any gaming.

Great picture- true 1080p in a 24" screen is rare. Colors are natural and blacks are rendered nicely. Ghosting is not a problem at all, even at 60hz. Remote is good quality and easy to use, but it only controls the TV (it's not universal). OSD is surprisingly well thought out. Speakers are better than average for a TV of this size and I have no trouble understanding dialog, but you can always use the digital audio output or headphone jack to connect external speakers. Good looking TV and pretty thin.

The only bad thing about this TV is that it really only has one HDMI jack. "HDMI 2" is for satellites, cable boxes, blu-ray, etc. and has both audio and video. "HDMI 1" is meant to be used with computers so only video is accepted- the audio input for "HDMI 1" is in the form of a mini headphone jack connection. Viewsonic did this for people who have older computers that use a DVI connection (HDMI's predecessor that only passed a video signal). So "HDMI 1's" audio has to be input via a mini headphone style cable. You could still attach, say, a blu-ray player to "HDMI 1" by using an HDMI cable for the video and an RCA to mini headphone cable for the audio. You can also use an "HDMI port saver" or an HDMI switch to swap multiple HDMI inputs through the "HDMI 2" input.

I would absolutely buy this TV again if I needed another one. My first choice was a 24" Panasonic, but it turns out that it is only 720p, NOT 1080p like the advertisements say. I probably wouldn't have noticed the lower resolution from my bed, but I wanted true 1080p in case I ever used this as a computer monitor. 1080p has double the pixels of 720p.

This TV is listed for sale by many Amazon merchants (in different posts than this one) for a lot more than Amazon lists it for (I bought it directly from Amazon). I think this is because other merchants are advertising this unit as a "worldwide" model since it can accept 120-240 volts. My GUESS is that it can display European frame rates (25hz and 50hz) but I don't have any European videos to test it with, so I don't know for sure.

Here are the settings that I recommend for use with a dish, which is highly compressed when compared to blu-ray video:

PICTURE:
Picture mode- personal
Contrast-14
Brightness- 50
Sharpness- 16
Tint- 50
Color-30
Color mode- personal
Aspect ratio- normal
Noise reduction- middle

OPTION:
Transparent- 75%
DCR- off
Backlight- low
HDMI overscan- off

UPDATE 3/4/13:

I hooked up a new laptop to this unit and it gave me the option of playing video at 25hz. So I tried it and it worked. The laptop didn't give an option for 50hz, so I still don't know if it can play 50hz.

This 4 stars are there because it is a great computer and has every function I needed but it's a bit bigger than I thought. The new features on windows 8 are pretty good, maybe a little disorganized but on the other hand, it's really fast and works perfectly with Adobe software which I use a lot.

So if you don't mind the size (or maybe if you do) this is an amazing computer for those who want a great performance and a well sized screen.
