Cisco Aironet 1040 Series AIR-AP1042N-A-K9 Dual-Band 802.11a/g/n Wireless Access Point Review

This is what a wireless access point should be. This thing just works, and my wireless headaches have gone away. once I connect a device to the network I don't have to trouble shoot why isn't this connecting automatically. I haven't had to reboot the WAP yet. The setup is not for the faint of heart or technical understanding. I got the WAP setup the first time out of the box in about 45min, but spent about 8hrs total. The menus are pretty straight forward to navigate, but there are a lot of configuration and security options to decide on. So the learning curve can be steep for a non-network professional. Most of that time was spent making decisions like "Do I want to run a radius server? Do I want to make the server in the WAP the primary or the backup server? Do I want to use multiple VLANs to allow for secure guest access? These were just some of the questions that I asked and decisions that I spent time on. If you know what your network architecture, and security is going to be, the setup can be done a lot quicker, if you know the command line interface scripts, the setup would be fast.

This is not consumer level product, and shouldn't be treated as such. It is in my mind well worth the extra cost, and learning required to set it up. I will probably recover the extra cost just by my phone always connecting to wifi and not using the data plan. There is also a less expensive version if you don't need dual band.

You should also be aware that this doesn't come with a power supply. This actually makes sense because if you are using a PoE solution, then you aren't paying for hardware that you won't use. This can be quite a significant savings for a medium to large scale deployment. But, you will need to decide were you will be mounting it and how you will power it. So, in general you want to plan for the deployment of this WAP before you buy it.

So, if you want a wireless networking solution that just works, I would highly recommend this product.
