MSI G Series GT70 2OD-001US 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Full disclosure, I bought this computer from a different vendor and not through Amazon. That said, I had to put a review out there to warn folks.

I got the computer and it was fast and well appointed. But within a few hours of getting things set up, the HDMI stopped working. I thought it was a the cord. Got a new one. Still didn't work. So, I tried the DisplayPort. It worked. Yay! I figured I could live without the HDMI as long as I didn't lose the DisplayPort too.

A few hours after that, I was playing Skyrim, getting that set up the way I liked it and...game freeze. Not unheard of with Skyrim, so I blamed the game. I tweaked and played with it, but it just got worse. After about an hour of fiddling, the machine got blazing hot and I got a video card error message. Mmm, not Skyrim's fault after all.

I called the vendor that sold me the computer and they confirmed that my video card was in the process of dying. So, the computer was basically a dud.

I know this happens but, this was the second MSI laptop to die within hours of ownership. (I will post a review for that machine as well.) I got an RMA for the comp, so I'm not going to criticize MSI's customer service. But, their quality control leaves a great deal to be desired.

I'm using it as a 2nd drive for my imac, it's fast! And doesn't have the lag of a typical external hd. also this has the largest space in an ssd I could find for a reasonable price.

This was purchased as an upgrade to the manufacturer's older 2-port model (which does not have driver support for OS X 10.8) The original card was purchased a few years back, but had to be moved to an older system after the 10.8 upgrade.

The RocketU 1144CM works great out of the box - the included drivers DO support 10.8.x. (for those confused about the other comments for this model)! Plug it in, run the installer, reboot, and done!

Avoid the "BM/AM" aka "USB 3.0 for Mac" models when running 10.8 - these are older, and have the same problems most other USB 3.0 cards have (no drivers for anything past 10.7).

This card seems to live up to the maker's performance claims - crazy fast for a USB card! Identical to eSATA speeds if you are using hard drives, and very comparable when running SSDs (and much easier to move disks between systems). It also supports RAID 0 and 1, and managed to handle two different arrays at the same time, with no noticeable performance drop. Interestingly, both cards recognize each others arrays (you can freely move configurations between both models).

Highly recommended! If you are running a Mac Pro, there is really no sense in settling for standard card at this point - don't waste your time.

Phorus PR1 Receiver with Multi-Room Wireless Audio Streaming Review

I waited about 6 months for the Phorus Speakers Phorus PS1 Speaker with Wi-Fi Streaming after seeing them on the Today show, and waited another 15 days for this Receiver component to become available. WOW! This system sounds super incredible now. It was definitely well worth the wait!

This thing is AWESOME. I connected it to my home stereo and in less than 4 minutes after unboxing it. I could have done it in 2 minutes but I forgot my wi-fi password. I was impressed the Phorus Receiver works exactly like the Phorus wi-fi speakers I purchased, so I didn't have to learn anything new to use it. They all connect together through my wi-fi router so I have music everywhere in the apartment now. Within an hour of setting the system up I realized it had seamlessly converted my Kindle Fire and HTC phone to serve as whole-home juke Box's serving up music to my home stereo in the living room and to the Phorus Speakers in my bedroom and kitchen.

We had a sort of impromptu party last night while all my friends randomly picked up my kindle from the cocktail table and picking songs they wanted to hear. Later on my neighbor came over and was able to download the app and play music he had on his phone throughout the rest of the evening. It really is a great system that almost connects itself to your wi-fi. You just have to give the app your wi-fi password once. So here's a tip: make sure you have your wi-fi password handy when you do the initial setup. Everything after that is super easy.
