Gateway DX4860-UR10P Desktop (Black) Review

I bought the Gateway DX4860-UR10P (Acer) Desktop computer in February 2012. The computer was working great for 4 month, now the computer will not load Windows 7 and the recovery disk was no help. To have it repaired under the 1 yr. warranty, I must have it shipped, at my cost, to Temple, Texas for repairs. I will not have a computer for at least 2 weeks.

I decided on this Sharp unit after searching high and low for an integrated unit that played mp3 cd as well as cassette tapes (I did not want to go the individual component route because of space consideration mainly). I looked for a micro-component system as well but the available models did not have cassette playback. Finally settled on this unit after reading the reviews on the lower model (minus the subwoofer). By the way, the other review on here for this unit is nonsense. Who buys defective stuff from a pawnshop and then rates the product badly online. Anyways...

I was impressed with the number of features on this system. In addition to tape and mp3 cd, it also plays music via usb thumb drive and includes an ipod / iphone dock as well. The bass output via the woofer was good too. The highs were a bit 'sharp' (no pun intended), so had to attenuate the treble via the remote. The unit does have an overall plasticy, kinda clunky feel to it and is a bit sizable. But I can live with that considering all the input sources and features it's loaded with. I purchased the unit brand new online for one hundred ninety six bucks including shipping, so am very happy with my purchase.

On a side note if you want to use all the input sources and don't care for the sound quality thru the sharp speakers, this can be hooked up to a mixer via the headphone port and played through a separate set of speakers. I've done this with my setup in order to play through a set of powered jbl monitors to get better sound quality.

These cartridges have been working flawlessly for over a month now.
Their output is lighter than the original HP toner, colors are not as saturated. However the HP toner was much too saturated. Pictures came out somewhat dark, lacking detail in the shadows. The brighter colors of the HP were more pleasing at first but the accuracy of the picture print suffered for it.
This toner printed lighter so you cannot mix these with the original HP toner or the HP toner colors will stand out and skew the final picture. I found that by setting the printer driver settings for vivid that this toner is much closer to accurate on photo printouts. It's still a shade light but the original HP toner was several shades too dark. In a comparison of a print against the monitor display, prints using this toner look very very good. For 1/4 the cost of the HP toner, it's a real bargain. Just remember not to mix these and the HP's.
At one point I did contact the vendor for a possible issue and they were great! The responded in less than than 24 hours and handled things perfectly!

Now that the cartridges have printed about 2,000 pages, all four started streaking. Also, larger single color areas start out dark at the beginning and lighten as they go down the page. The printer reports that each cart has printed about 2000 pages and all but black have about 30% of the toner left. The black just ran out but had some light streaking for the last few hundred pages. The color coverage is very uneven, blotchy, and has very noticeable streaking in the output. I'm not complaining much because a set of four cartridges still cost only 1/4 of what HP originals do but I am docking them a star because, with 30% of the toner left, I consider the color cartridges no longer useable and will have to replace them to get clean printing again.

I like the board a lot. I think I prefer ASUS build quality to MSI, or Gigabyte. The BIOS is nicely designed. The software bundle is adequate. Looks great, but I lost enthusiasm for it when it didn't offer much overclocking boost. Intel's Smart Connect is pretty useless, but that's not ASUS's fault. However, I think the June release of Intel network drivers caused Windows 8 to BSOD. The HD4600 Graphics are great and Quick Sync with HandBrake's nightly is insanely fast 450fps peak DVD-to-H.264 conversion. I can recommend this board for any power efficient HTPC build.
