The USB is heavy due to the metal back. From the picture you see the outline is silver. This is the silver metal that covers the entire back of the flash drive. The front is made from hard durable plastic, and it's slightly glossy.
The USB head does retract. Push down on the arrow and retract the head into the body. Do the same to unsheathe it. Once unsheathed, it locks into place and the head stays and doesn't retract when inserting into a USB port. The USB is 7/8" wide and 3" long with the USB head unsheathed. When the head is retracted, it is 2.5" in length.
The back has two small holes to insert a lanyard or key ring through.

Regarding speed, when this USB 3 flash drive was plugged into a USB 3 port, to transfer 10.3 GB (28 video files) from the computer to the flash drive, it took: 7 minutes.
