We purchased the AD11 Plus to stream movies and TV from the internet after we discontinued our on-demand cable TV service. (We have a 46" HDTV connected with an HDMI cable. We have been using an HP Pavilion Slimline that has become unreliable due to a flakey connector that causes the power to shut completely off with no warning at all; power comes back after jiggling the PS wires/motherboard connector... oh sorry, I digress, that's a separate story thick with poor HP customer service and other intrigue.)

We love the small form factor, elegant design, and solid construction of the AD11. It was very simple to install windows 7 home premium and drivers using an optical drive connected to one of the two USB 2.0 ports and a wireless keyboard/trackball combo attached through the other. Drivers were then updated with the latest versions through the internet.

Then we started to see what it could do:
Boot up was about 30 seconds from the SSD, OK but not stellar. Wakeup from sleep was only a few seconds, nice. Win 7 functions were quick and smooth. Internet search through our gigabit wired network was also very responsive. We didn't try the wireless.

Youtube streaming was great at all resolutions. CPU peaked out at around 50-60%. Standard definition streaming from Amazon VOD and Netflix was equally good. HOWEVER, HD Netflix was a bust - the picture quality was good, but frames were lost and the audio went out of sync as the CPU cores hovered between 95 and 100%.

I searched around the internet and especially on the Zotac forum and found that others have had similar problems that stem from the way that Netflix/silverlight is encoded - such that it has to be handled by the underpowered CPU while the GPU is loafing. I downloaded and installed accelerator software for the Radeon chipset in the AD11 from the AMD website - this was suggested by a posting on the Zotac website. Unfortunately, this made no difference at all. No HD from Netflix is a major show stopper for us.
The other big negative was the fan noise. The AD11 was pretty quiet when we first turned it on. But after a few minutes with standard resolution streaming (60% CPU usage) the sound was very distracting, especially during the quieter moments of the movie we were watching.

Sorry to say, we returned it to Amazon for a refund... darn, we really wanted to like it!

BUT, there is good news - we think we did find an answer for our HTPC quest while investigating the HD Netflix problem on the Zotac forum. Just not for how to fix the AD11, instead, we saw a YouTube review for the Zotac ID82 Plus that contains an i3 processor with plenty of power to handle the HD and is nearly silent! The ID82 is about the size of a Mac Mini but less expensive if you already have a Win7 license (4x the volume of the AD11) and is still much smaller than our Slimline. We can't wait to try it as soon as we get our refund for the AD11.

LCD Monitor/Keyboard Extension Stand Wall Mount/Desktop Clamp Black(002-0003B) Review

Why is it so hard to find arm keyboard trays? I bought this from Amazon to return it if necessary, but I think I'll keep it. It barely fits my Saitek II.

Pros:
- Very easy to install.
- Very easy to use: Pull, push, turn.
- Nice Mousepad.
- Clamp anywhere, with option to wall mount

Cons:
- Tray is not adjustable downwards in height, only upwards. You can tilt it downwards, but the keyboard can never be set lower than the surface of the table it is clamped on.
- Tray is a tad small.
- Monitor arm is too close and unadjustable. I don't even see how it's usable with a 19", let alone a 24".
- Wrist pad is just a bit too thin; or, it doesn't cover the metal edge for your wrists. I think I'm going to use some thin cardboard to put underneath it, but if you have your own wrist pads by all means try them. My Fellows one was a bit too thick.
- Tray is bit bouncy for heavy typing.

Overall if I had the room and the right table, I'd definitely buy a more standard keyboard tray with adjustable height,

Great sound, Minimal sound leak even when turned up loud. Color is great, probably the best closed can headphones you can get for under $175 dollars. the cable is nice and long, but that could be good or bad depending on what you're doing. Mids and Highs are super nice, bass is punchy but not overwhelming. A little bit of EQ adjustment goes a long way. the included rechargeable backup battery is way nicer than I expected. I can get a few solid charges from it on my Defy XT. the double USB plugs are nice to boost the life on my iPod and Bluetooth speaker at the same time.

LaCie 4TB Blade Runner USB 3.0 External Hard Drive - Limited Edition Review

This thing is big, heavy (relatively) and very impressive looking! It has a massive 4 terabytes of storage and speed seems very good - limited primarily by the speed of your USB (3,0 or 2.0) interface. The cross shaped switch glows Orange when on, blinks when active, and Green when the drive goes into power saving eco mode..."green" get it? ;)

No one who sees this drive will fail to be impressed by the styling - it definitely looks like a serious piece of gear - but more importantly - it *is* a serious piece of gear. I will come back and update this review as I have more experience, but it appears to deliver what it promises. Definitely a unique piece of gear.

This thing is a work of art and very functional art at that.

2013 May 28 -- Updating my review: Raising my rating to 5 stars based on overall excellence - it's worth the premium price!

First -- when I say big -- let me back-track on that - it is big compared to many drives these days, but overall it is still pretty small for a 4-TB drive - it's about 5.5 x 7.5 x 3 inches. It is virtually silent in operation. It has never gotten hot in operation in my (light) use. The fins work well to radiate heat -- feel fairly cool all of the time. The drive has a 2 year warranty.

The drive comes with A/C tips for international use. Plug end is a bit big, but not too bad, it has adapter and plug combined and then cable to the drive. USB cable is about 3 ft. The Cross Shaped LED Power indicator is also the On/Off button for the drive. The drive was very well packaged for shipping. All software is on the drive itself. You just plug it in and then run the Lacie Setup as instructed. Installation was quick and easy - a breeze, really, and I had no problems at all. Cable management is well designed, fins on bottom serve as cable guide to ports which are recessed and hidden on the bottom right (considering power light as "front").

During set-up it asks you how you want the drive partitioned. Default is a 32 GB "Share" for FAT32 and 3.6 TB NTFS -- I chose the default but you can reduce the "share" partition if you wish. The FAT32 and NTFS will each show up as separate drives in Windows Explorer (as usual). You are also prompted to register your drive during setup.

Set-up also allows you to choose which software you want installed. I chose everything which includes the Blade Runner manual, Genie Timeline Free (Backup), Lacie Desktop Manager, Lacie Private/Public (encryption), and Wuala(Cloud storage). All installed quickly. The "Share" partition is used by the software (~359 MB), but the NTFS is left clean (except for a few hidden files). Nice.

The user interface and install process was excellent and way above average -- in keeping with the premium nature of this drive. Hats off to Lacie for that! (I am very tired of poorly thought out installation routines and crappy install software.) The Genie Timeline is nice, easy to use backup software with a nice interface. You have to upgrade (i.e. pay) for "disaster recovery" backup capability. But all normal backup features work. You can backup files by type (e.g. Music, Video, Photos, etc.) or by specifying locations directly (as usual). Fine for free. I have not used the encryption software yet, but it looks OK. The Wuala is your typical cloud storage (like SkyDrive, DropBox, and similar). Again, fine for a freebie.

The Lacie Desktop Manager software is pretty basic stuff. You can set preferences (e.g. enable logging), reformat your drive, and - the most important feature - set the "eco" standby mode which will put your drive in a low power "standby" mode after some minutes of non-use (you select the time 1,2,5,10,30 minutes or 1,2 hours). You can disable this if you prefer.

In daily operation, it just works. It's there and you use it as you normally would except that you have 3.6+ terabytes of storage at your beck and call. For what you get, I think the price is reasonable. The overall "user experience" is top notch. And it looks darn cool -- like a serious piece of gear, which it is.

Can't think of any negatives, really. It delivers exactly what it promises. It's actually a bit cheaper now, too. So 5 stars for overall excellent design, performance, and value.
