LandingZone 2.0 PRO 11" Secure Docking Station for MacBook Air Model A1465 Released June 2012 and 2013 Review

I've had this dock for about 4 months. I was happy with it right away, and like it even more as time goes on.

Furthermore, the manufacturer has provided exceptional support. I contacted them about a couple issues, they responded immediately and were very helpful and pleasant. One turned out to be a problem with OS X (not their dock). Another problem was that my wifi speeds were greatly reduced when my Air was in this dock on the other side of the house from my router; they said the models they're producing now have different shielding, as Apple made a change to the wifi radio in the 2013 Macbook Airs; I had one of the very first docks they produced. They sent me a replacement to try, at their own expense, and they did not ask me to return my original unit until after the replacement arrived and I could see whether it worked better. It did, and I'm returning my original unit--with a postage-paid label they included.

In short, they've gone to considerable expense and effort to keep me a fully satisfied customer. Based on this, and on the quality of their product, I will surely buy another one the next time I get a new Macbook.

What follows is a review I posted here a couple months ago. Because there are so few reviews, I've provided a lot of detail to help prospective buyers make a more informed purchase decision. As a result, my review is on the long side--sorry for that.

If you want a docking station for your MacBook Air, there aren't many options. This is a an excellent one. It is cleverly designed, simple and easy to use, and light-weight enough to take with you if you wish. Everything works as advertised. I've had mine for a while now, and I'm very happy with it. I take my Air to work most days, and I really appreciate the convenience of easy dock/undock instead of plugging/unplugging a multitude of peripherals and my external display each time. Plus, it reduces desktop clutter.

This docking station has a total of four USB 3.0 ports. The one on the left side of the unit is a direct pass-through to the USB port on the left side of the Air. On the back of the docking station are three USB 3.0 ports that are, in essence, a USB hub that's connected to the USB port on the right side of your Air. For best results, I plug the most important USB peripheral into the pass-through port on the left side (which is usually the external hard drive I use for Time Machine or my SuperDrive external optical drive). Note that an iPad plugged into one of the three USB ports on the back will sync with iTunes perfectly but will not charge--as is the case with other USB hubs I've tried. To charge an iPad from your Air, you must plug it into the pass-through USB port on the left side of the docking station.

The docking station also has a direct pass-through port for the mini-display port jack. My external monitor is plugged into this (using a DVI to mini-display-port dongle I purchased from monoprice). It works perfectly.

The docking station also has an Ethernet port. I've tested it and it works perfectly.

The docking station requires you to use the Mag Safe 2 power cord that came with your June 2012 or later Macbook Air. The older Mag Safe power cord with a Mag Safe 2 adapter will not work with this docking station.

When docked, the back of the air is raised about 1/2" or so, which alters the angle for typing. It's similar to the angle of most external keyboards I've tried, and perfectly comfortable for me, though I mostly use an external Apple bluetooth keyboard.

The only thing this docking station lacks is an audio mini-jack output for headphones or external speakers. But when your Air is docked, the audio jack on the left side of your Air is unobstructed, so you can plug speakers or headphones in there.

The docking station has its own power cord with a small brick on the wall plug, and the other end plugs into a small hole in the back of the docking station. If it's not plugged in, the three USB ports on the back will not work, but all the other ports work perfectly.

My Air has Boot Camp and Windows 7; when I boot into and use Windows, all of the docking station's ports work perfectly.

Docking and undocking is very smooth. Apparently, docking action was a bit sticky on a few of the very first units produced. But this issue has long been resolved.

I've had some contact with the manufacturer and found them to be extremely responsive and helpful. They really want the product to succeed and seem to understand that providing excellent customer support is important.

You might think this dock is a bit on the expensive side. I did too, at first, but I soon came around for a couple reasons.

First, you're not just getting the convenience of easy dock/undock. You're also getting a USB 3.0 hub, ethernet adapter, and the ability to use a Kensington lock.

Second, this is not a high-volume product from Belkin, Kensington, or other big-name corporation, but a new product invented by a regular guy (well, a really smart regular guy); he funded the development of his invention with Kickstarter and it is produced in relatively low volumes. I think there's real social value in this kind of innovation, and I'm happy to support it if the product is of high quality. The LandingZone dock is.

The Landing Zone docking station is terrific and a real pleasure to use, and tech support (should you need it) is exceptional. This product is very worthy of your consideration.

Before purchasing, I recommend visiting the manufacturer's website and watching the short video, which shows the docking station in action.
