HP Envy H8-1410 Desktop (Black) Review

I just received the HP Envy H8-1410 for Christmas and wanted to convey some of my initial reactions to the unit itself and its performance. I'm a long time computer person and have built several so I'm quite familiar with desktop setup and function.

FIRST THOUGHTS:
I first want to recognize that the HP Envy series is HP's top of the line desktop model and is at a premium price point over their Pavilion line-up. The Envy series is tied to their Beats Audio sponsorship, so all Envy products come with Beats Audio certification. Additionally, some of the finishing touches are nicer than the Pavilion series such as polished metal finishes, subtle curves, and illuminating accents. I have to say that I really like the sleek finish of the front of the case. I currently have this setup next to a desk so the unit is exposed and having the glossy black front gives it character that other desktops don't have. The packaging of the unit was fine and well protected. In standard computer desktop fashion, everything is packaged nicely in the main box and visual guides were present to aid in setup (for those that need it). It is a minimalist approach now, with very few manuals or cords supplied (power cable, keyboard, and mouse are however).

TURNING IT ON:
The Envy fired right up with the push of the power button (which is located on the top of the case) and it immediately went through the Windows setup. In typical HP-fasion, as soon as Windows was completed, it went through and installed all of the HP "bloatware" (16 different programs to be exact). Bloatware is all the programs that the manufacturer forces you to have during the initial installation as due to marketing agreements (and kickbacks) with those companies. While not harmful to the computer it certainly is unnecessary, but they were easily removed from the computer (once I found out where the remove programs option was in Windows 8!) It immediately recognized my WIFI Network via it's built-in WLAN card (nice touch), however I wish it took advantage of dual-band technology like the new iPad has. The processor is snappy enough to handle all of the basic things I threw at it such as web browsing, streaming Netflix, a couple video imports from my phone, etc.

GRIPES:
While no computer is perfect I think there were a couple obvious oversights that HP made in its "premium" lineup in this particular model. First, there is NO HDMI connector on this computer. This is a MUST in today's video heavy world. People looking to use this a home theatre PC should look elsewhere. Additionally, there is no Blu-Ray...it's a $120 option. Again, very limiting for a multi-media type PC desktop. The case is cramped...while this is more because I like to upgrade my computers, HP doesn't give you much space to get in there if you needed to. Finally, this unit boasts an integrated video card. People that have desktops today do so because they typically want to work on photos, videos, or play hard on games...all of which require a dedicated video card.

CLOSING THOUGHTS:
While I think the Envy lineup of HP desktops is a great looking product, I can't recommend this particular setup. Instead, I would HIGHLY recommend that you spend an additional $50 and get the H8-1435 or 1430 which comes with a dedicated video card, HDMI, and more RAM. A tiny price to pay to ensure your setup will fit your needs and give you the connectivity that today's environment demands.
