ASUS DirectCU II 28nm Graphics Card HD7970-DC2-3GD5 Review

As an avid player of Battlefield 3, I wanted an upgrade from the ATI Battlefield 2: Vietnam HD 6870 video card, so ordered this one for a particular reason: extra cooling.

ATI/AMD video cards even in nice computer cases with ample airflow and cooling run hotter than Hell. In heavy gaming or Folding the 6870 -- not OCed even -- topped 80c. With the case next to me, my room became a sweat lodge (in the dead of winter @ 17F outside was the only time I needed to turn on the heat!). So this time I wanted some extra cooling.

Some Notes about Installation:

This card weighs. It's v-e-r-y heavy. You'll need to screw all three screws in to keep this bad boy from sagging. It really does look like a metal brick, too. The photos just don't give a good idea of it's scale...it's huge.

This card is also as long as other recent HD and GTX reference cards, but what isn't said in the reviews is it's depth. I use the HAF-X full size tower case which has a cavernous interior and use it's video card cooler addon module. But with the Asus video card I can't use that video cooler module as it's deeper than the cage. Keep this in mind when thinking about getting this card. Also make sure there's enough clearance between the seated video card and the door fan (on the HAF-X case it fits but narrower cases may have issues).

In the HAF-X case (using this as a reference as it's one of the largest interior non-cube cases on the market) the 3rd slot of the video card is very snug against the 4th slot cover, so removed it (could just loosen it to slide the 1/8" through). The height of the card is so huge that it blocks the 2nd PCI 2.0 slot on a AsRock P67 Extreme 6 motherboard, eliminating the chance of a triple Crossfire setup.

The 2 PCIE sockets are both 8 pins (not 4+3) and the recommended PSU is 600watts with 42A for the 12v rails. The issues I suspect with people having with this card is not having a decent PSU, as cheaper PSUs have less cold amps (watts are only part of the equation of a decent PSU, being able to cold start a full PC from boot to desktop is the other part). I'm using the Seasonic 800w Modular Gold PSU in the HAF-X case, and the cabling is a tad tight (especially going around this massive video card), but clean.

Other Notes:

At stock settings and "as is" on a stock i7-2600k processor the Futuremark 3D Mark 11 Advanced default benchmarking score was X2814. Obviously with more tweaking and some overclocking this video card can easily pass 3200.

Tested the card on Blu-Ray ripping and conversion, and it took about 10 minutes into it before some heat even emerged from the exhaust fan. It was warm, not hot. 2hrs in, I got so cold from the AC running (normally had to keep it running with the HD 6870) had to turn it off. So heat wise the heatsink/pipes really do work in day-to-day practical use (not in some testing lab in perfect conditions).

Overall, very satisfied in quality of construction; container it was shipped in (heck of a lot of anti-static thick foam); ease of seating this monster (smooth as butter); didn't even need to fight with the PCIE sockets, all fitted like a well worn glove. Pricey but you do get what you pay for...it's a tank of a video card.

See ya on the Battlefield!
