I've had this keyboard for about four months and use it for both general text and writing code on a Mac.

This is a great keyboard. It has mechanical Cherry key switches with a smooth action and a light touch; mechanical switches make a HUGE difference in tactile feedback, effort, and the overall typing experience. The layout is well thought-out. Inside, the switches are individually soldered to flexible fingers of circuit board and connected to a controller board in the middle with ribbon cables. Thus the high price of this keyboard is explained. That high price also buys you a great design that's very easy to take apart and clean. The keyboard comes with a key removal tool and Option/Command keys for Mac usage.

The unit is wide, with keys spaced apart so that they're much nearer shoulder-width than a regular keyboard. My wrists are straight and I can type much longer before getting sore. The goofy-looking key wells actually set the keys at just the right height for the various fingers. The editing, Option/Alt, Ctrl, Command, and Enter keys are operated by the thumbs and actually make a lot of sense, with the most frequently used keys requiring the least reach--no more reaching for the backspace key! PGUP/DN and HOME/END take more of a reach but are closer than with a conventional keyboard.

The design mounts the circuit boards to the top side of the keyboard. When I splattered coffee on my keyboard (yes, even a $300 keyboard isn't safe), I was delighted to find the electronic components mounted out of harm's way. Some compressed air and a few days to dry and I was back in business. (SShhh.. don't tell!)

I didn't think I'd be all that happy with the hardware Dvorak support, but now I understand why it makes sense to use it with this keyboard, and therefore why the Q/D switchable model makes sense if you're going to use Dvorak. On a standard keyboard, nearly all the non-control keys move positions. On the Kinesis Q/D dual legend model, however, the +, -, and [ ] keys are in unconventional places and aren't meant to change position, and therefore have only one legend on them. So, if you use software to change the layout, you'll be very frustrated, but if you use the hardware support, it's a breeze and keeps the key legends honest.

Negatives:

- The keyboard's unique shape is TALLER than a conventional keyboard by at least 1.5". If your desk is close to being too high with a flat KB, you may end up with shoulder pain from having the keyboard too high with the Advantage unless you plan ahead for a slightly taller keyboard. I use a keyboard tray to drop it a few inches below table height.

- The square bracket keys are a bit awkward for the uninitiated. I write a lot of code, so I need square brackets all the time. Frankly, though, I'm not sure where they could have put them that would have been any more convenient than where they are. I've gotten used to it to the point where I don't mind anymore, but it took a few weeks to get there.

- Full adaptation has taken me months. I could type regular text pretty quickly within a couple days, but the arrow keys took a while to get used to, as did the editing keys, square brackets, +, and - keys. If you are determined to use a better keyboard, though, it's worth it. Also, I found that the X, C, and V keys (Q, J, and K in Dvorak) are shifted to the left from what I was expecting. If you type "by the book" and use your middle finger to type the C/J key, you'll have no problem. I, however, tend to use my pointer finger instead, which is a habit I had to break to use the Advantage.

Overall, I think the design philosophy of this American-made keyboard really complements the Dvorak layout. Despite the high price, I'm strongly considering buying a second one for the office!
