Note: This review has been updated, please check out the updated section below after reading. I've added a star to the rating since updating. This monitor was to replace my old 19 inch full frame BenQ which died on me last week. I had been using it as a secondary monitor to my 22inch gateway wide. Figured I'd upgrade the 22 and use it as the secondary from now on since it has a stuck pixel that I can't get rid of.
This new monitor shines standing next to that older gateway. The color is vibrant and blacks are nice and deep, and the display is nice and crisp. I set this monitor up and out of the box it looked great. Win 7 recognized it immediately as my main display and configured itself to use both monitors. Know this however, this monitor does not come with DVI input, only VGA and HDMI so if you are planning to purchase you need an adapter to convert HDMI to DVI or a Graphics card with HDMI out. This wasn't a problem for me since I have HDMI out on my graphics card and luckily I was aware of the lack of DVI when I bought it. This doesn't really hurt my rating though as the adapter isn't really that expensive it just would have been nice if they had included it. You'll also need an HDMI cable which is also not supplied.
Back to the review, as I said this monitor looked good out of box with no tuning. I spent maybe five minutes messing with settings before I was happy. I DID NOT install the MagicTune software as I have heard horror stories about it in the past but other people appear to be using this and the drivers and are really happy with the product.
The fact that they put cable routing into the base is nice, however the way the monitor sits on the base's neck is very concerning. I messed around with this for about 45 mins trying to get the screen to snap onto the neck but never happened. I pushed it on as far as it would go but it comes back off easily and pretty much just balances on the end of the neck. It's almost as if they are relying on cable tension to hold it in place. Not a wise move, hopefully there is a way to snap it in place that I don't know about I plan on working on that later tonight. Just having the screen teetering on the end of the neck has me very worried I'll come home from work one day with the screen laying flat on my keyboard.
I am not a spec slave so if you wanna get into a discussion about TN panels vs. IPS panels I'm not your guy. As my review says this is a great monitor for the layman, despite its poor stand design, which may also be my own operator's error.
Anyone who knows how to get the monitor to secure itself to the base please review this item and put that info into the review or reply to my review. It would help so many others.
UPDATE: As I said I would work on the stand issue when I got home from work. I turned the monitor all the way around and began pushing the neck of the stand into the monitor gradually increasing the force and it finally made a faint clicking sound. I was too scared when I first got this monitor of pressing too hard and causing screen distortion but now that it wasn't 11 at night and I wasn't tired I was able to get a better working angle and try my hand at it again. Wish the stand was a little easier to lock into place but it does feel sturdy now and I'm no longer afraid its going to fall onto my keyboard. Also can lower the tilt angle to where I like it. The viewing angle isn't terrible anyway but I prefer my monitors pointing more directly. Hope this helps anyone else who may have had questions. This monitor is a solid buy for anyone just remember to give it a little extra pressure when trying to attach the stand.
