Product Description

Apple Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66GHz 3GB Memory Desktop Computer 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Introducing the new Mac Pro, featuring the Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor! Features: * The "Nehalem" advantage. Many quad-core processors are composed of two separate dies, which means some cached data has to travel outside the processor to get from core to core. That's an inefficient way to access information. Enter the Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor. Its single-die, 64-bit architecture makes 8MBof fully shared L3 cache readily available to each of the four processor cores. The result is fast access to cache data and greater application performance. Combine that with the other technological advances and you get a Mac Pro that's up to 1.9x faster than the previous generation.1 * Memory bottlenecks begone. System memory is often connectedto a processor through a separate I/O controller. But each Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor features an integrated memory controller - another leap forward for workstation system architecture. By connecting memory directly to the processor, the new Mac Pro processors have faster access to data storedin memory, and memory latency is reduced by up to40 percent. * Power when (and where) you need it. The new Mac Pro introduces Turbo Boost: a dynamic performance technology that automatically boosts the processor clock speed based on workload. If you're using an application that doesn't need every core, Turbo Boost shuts off the idle cores whilesimultaneously increasing the speed of the activeones, up to 3.33GHz on a 2.93GHz Mac Pro. * Thevirtue of virtual cores. The new Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processors support Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So an 8-core Mac Pro presents 16 virtual cores that are recognized by Mac OS X. Performance is enhanced because Hyper-Threading enables the processor to take better advantage of the execution resour

Apple Mac Pro MB871LL/A Desktop (OLD VERSION) Review

I bought this Mac Pro to replace a PowerMac that was over seven years old, and which had fallen inadequate to handle my increasingly demanding digital image processing, and which was all but worthless at running Microsoft Windows.

This Mac Pro is probably 8x faster than the PowerMac at most tasks, and its case design is lovely. The way PCI cards snap into and out of place without screws, the easy accessibility of the DIMM slots on a pull-out card, and the ability to add and remove drives without cables, all reflect Apple's obsession with details.

Despite having at least one massive fan in the case, it is much quieter than the PowerMac. In another advantage over the older machine, it has ports on both the front and back. As with previous Mac Pros and PowerMacs, RAM, disk, connectivity, and optical drives are all very expandable.

The Mac Pro runs Windows Vista faster than any dedicated Windows box I've ever used, and with VMware Fusion, I can even run Windows applications within the Mac environment. The Mac Pro comes with all sorts of Apple software, though I use mostly third party alternatives (my first three installations were Microsoft Office, Adobe CS4, and Mathematica). The latter two run much better on this than they, or their predecessors, had ever run on the PowerMac. I'm keeping the old box around only to run some much older software, which by virtue of needing Mac OS9 or some other quirk, won't run on the new box. In general, software compatibility is excellent. I had no trouble with drivers for my tablet or printer or any of my scanners (Nikon, Canon, and Fujitsu).

What's not to love? Some will complain about the price, but I'm not going to bother; if you want a cheaper machine, iMacs and Mac Minis are available. The absence of Firewire 400 was a disappointment for me, though adapter cables and PCI cards are readily available. I bought a Sonnet card that adds two firewire 400 ports for about $50. This box is PCI-Express only, so you won't be able to use standard PCI or PCI-x cards. Some may grouse about Apple's standard keyboard and/or mouse, but I use third party solutions there too.

I got 7+ years out of my last computer, and I would not be surprised to get the same out of this one.

Kinesis Corporation KB800PB-US-20 Kinesis Freestyle2 Keyboard Pc Black Review

I got this keyboard because I had a wrist injury and it hurt to type with my wrists bent at an angle for a straight keyboard. My wrists are extremely comfortable with this keyboard so I'm happy with it even though there will be an adjustment period to get back up to my previous typing speed.

This is my second day using this keyboard and I'm adjusting pretty well. I used to type about 70wpm on my old keyboard. On the first day with this keyboard I was averaging about 40wpm. Today I can type 50wpm with it, which feels a little bit better. My comfort level is improving...I think in a week or two I'll be typing as fast as I did before.

My biggest hurdle adjusting to it is that I used to always use my right hand for the B key, but that key is on the left side of the keyboard. I assume I'll get used to that eventually. Right now I'm just stumbling every time I run into a word with a B in it. :) Too bad the keyboard can't have two B keys, one on each side - just like there are two spacebars - that would be the perfect keyboard as far as I'm concerned.

I love that I can move it around and put the halves wherever I want them... that would be impossible with most ergonomic keyboards but I frequently move it around mid-sentence to make myself more comfortable.

I think the extra cable length is really useful ... I don't have an under the desk keyboard drawer but it's comfortable to put it on top of my desk with the halves wide. If I had an under the desk keyboard drawer I probably wouldn't need the extra cable length.

MSI NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660 Ti 3GB GDDR5 OC 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card

MSI NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660 Ti 3GB GDDR5 OC 2DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card N660TI TF 3GD5/OC Review

Have had this card for over a week now, so absolute stability can be questionable but so far quite stable. I did a 15 minute burn in test, but this new gpu design wont get fully stressed in furmark, it wont hit its 1110 MHz boost, so pay some mind to that factor. I went with the 3GB version because i had two 460 1gb's in SLI which could run BF3 on ultra with plenty of fps, but....not enough vram, so it would stutter badly and slam the 1 gig cap the moment i loaded a map. Now bf3 has plenty of space, seen it get up around 2 gigs at 1920 by 1080 on ultra,60 plus fps up to about 120 in confined spaces, everything maxed, gameplay is smooth as butter even if lower fps due to that extra ram. One nice thing i noticed, if you alt tab and tab back into a game, its instant, now locking up for a few seconds due to the space it can load the textures now ^^ If you only ever plan on just 1 card until next gen or 2 gens after this series you can go with the 2gb version, no biggie, but if u plan to SLI and have peace of mind with extra vram or much higher resolutions, go bigger space, just remember the extra ram is not going to add more fps, it just gives it plenty of room to proccess what it has.

Power usage has dropped nicely from the SLI 460's i used to eat about 700 to 800 watts, fro the wall, with my server (only eats 130) and the main rig when the system is under load, now its 470 to 500 with this one card. Server off the card on desktop eats about 180 to 190 watts, now that includes three 200 MM fans, and two 140 mm fans with two 7200 RPM drives, raptor 10k rpm and a SSD drawing power also. Load with gaming rig is around 350 watts in game. Another amazing thing i did not expect though about this card, its darn quiet, I DO NOT HEAR IT IN GAME, and my oh my do i love that, the 460's with the aftermarket coolers i heard under load, not this card, love it. Highest temp i've yet to hit is 62C while running unigine to give a benchmark for this review. Haven't had a higher temyet!

Unigine settings are as follows. this is version 3.0 basic
FPS: 97.3 (avg)
Score 2450 (compared to a rig with two 570's he got 2880)
Min fps 39.2
Max fps: 216.2

Settings, Render dirtx 11
Mode: 1920x 1080 full screen
Shaers High
Textures High
Filter Trilinear
Anisotropy 4x
Occlusion enabled
refraction Enabled
Volumentric Enabled
Tessellation Disabled.

DriveStation Axis Velocity is the perfect solution for quickly expanding storage or backing up your computer.

BUFFALO DriveStation Axis Velocity 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - HD-LX3.0TU3 Review

Lets start with why I purchased this...well after running out of space on my internal 1TB SATA III Hitachi hard drive, I had to make a decision to either buy a second larger internal 2TB hard drive or go external to use for additional data storage. I weighed the benefits of getting an internal one...fast theoretical native SATA III 6Gbps interface speed, no desktop clutter/wires etc vs the disadvantages...fixed not removable/portable so cannot be connected to a router or laptop computer etc.

I ultimately decided to go external because I definitely prefer the option of being able to disconnect the hard drive and connecting it to another computer or device such as a router for streaming/sharing. I'm aware that I also could share an internal hard drive over the network with other devices but that means 1) My computer needs to be on 2) My computer will slow down if another device is streaming content from it...been there done that. With an external hard drive I could just connect it to my router which has USB ports and it will automatically be accessible from other network devices without affecting my computer in any way. Not only that but when using USB 3.0 (5Gbps) and directly connected to a computer the theoretical transfer rate is not much slower than SATA III (6Gbps). Regardless the bottle neck will be the mechanical transfer speed of the hard drive which is around 125MB/s (1Gbps) anyway. Also even though the drive inside the Buffalo unit is a SATA II (3Gbps) model the mechanical transfer rate is still well below that interface's theoretical speed. Only when using Wi-Fi on my new Belkin AC1200 Dual Band Wireless AC Router does the theoretical transfer rate drop to 480Mbps but that's only because the router has USB 2.0 ports instead of 3.0. The router itself has a wireless theoretical 867Mbps data transfer rate on the 5GHz band.

At the time of this writing this external hard drive was the same price as the non-Velocity model so to me it made so much more sense to get this one instead. The main differences between this DriveStation Axis Velocity and the non-Velocity model BUFFALO DriveStation Axis 2 TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - HD-LB2.0TU3 is:

1. 7200 rpm hard drive vs 5400 rpm
2. 2 year warranty vs 1 year
3. Optional hardware encryption

So with the technical talk out of the way lets move on to the design/styling which quite frankly I found to be utterly slick. In my opinion it's one of if not the most stylish plastic cased desktop hard drives on the market. It's one of those pieces of computer equipment that you'd want to display proudly instead of hiding it under the desk or in a drawer. Just as the pictures show the sides are matte black while the center "water fall" strip/panel is high gloss. The only other desktop drives that look just as good are the brushed metal Porsche Designs but those also cost more. The case also has stylishly designed vents along the perimeter of the body. I suspect that when this drive eventually gets full I'll get another one. The stylish exterior design works well when stood side by side or stacked.

Finally with regards to function and performance, I've found it to be acceptably fast and quiet right out of the box even without installing any of the included software and despite only using a USB 2.0 connection. After installing the hard drive caching application Turbo PC EX which is included on the drive, transfer rates seem to improve when copying a large number of files. Since USB 2.0's theoretical transfer rate is lower than the hard drive's mechanical transfer rate I suspect using USB 3.0 will be quite a bit faster. Buffalo says real world speeds using USB 3.0 will be about 4-5 times faster than USB 2.0. Unfortunately at the time of this writing I do not have a computer with USB 3.0 ports so cannot test this claim..though there's no reason why it wouldn't hold true. When connected to my Belkin AC1200 router it worked fine as a NAS drive and I was able to stream HD 1080p videos contained on the hard drive wirelessly to my computer and even my iPhone 4 smoothly.

On a related note one cool feature of this drive is the tri-color activity/power/locked LED. When in USB 1.1/2.0 mode it lights up green while in USB 3.0 it's blue. When using encryption mode the LED is red. Another nice feature of this drive is the option to install a cooling fan via a user removable mounting bracket on the back. This is a very "cool" option for situations where you're backing up lots of data which may take many hours to complete and where the ambient room temperature may already be warm or hot. Anyway for my mode of usage (media/file server) I did not enable the hardware encryption function nor did I install the RAMDISK or Back Up utility.

Patriot Aero 1TB Wireless Mobile Drive (PCGTW1000S) Review

This is my second wireless hard drive. For 1 terabyte, I can put a lot of movies, my entire music collection, documents and photos. It is a lot easier to setup, I guess the app is a lot more polished compared to when wireless hard drives are relatively new.

It was packaged nicely in a beautiful sturdy box with the drive well protected by a dense foam. It came with a USB 3.0 cable and power adapter for charging the internal lithium-ion battery. Also some extra adapters for non-US users. Make sure to charge it fully the first time you take it out of the box. The AC wall adapter is rated 100-240V so even if you travel to Asia or other countries you can still plug it on the wall without the need of a transformer. It has a folding prong and has an output of 5V at 2Amps. A full charge can last up to 6 hours.

Using the USB 3.0 cable, I transferred whole movies, pictures and documents in lightning speed. I have a couple of WD Passport drives for 2 TB, compared to them the Aero is a tad bigger in heft, but you have to remember that the Aero houses its own battery. I pressed the button on the side and confirmed I have 4 white LEDs for a fully charged battery. The first thing you need to do is download the free app - available from the Appstore (for IOS) and Google and Amazon for Androids. The app is very light, it took only a few seconds to download it to my iphone, iPad and Mini. Upon firing up the app, I was able to connect to the drive's content by switching to its own Wifi; initial SSID is Patriot; you can rename it later. I played one of my high def home travel movies, it buffered for a few seconds and then start playing. Playing a DVD quality movie streams instantly, even scrubbing it in the middle, it continued to play almost in an instant. For pictures, Aero has its own built-in slideshow app. It is not as sophisticated as other slideshow softwares, but you can set the length in seconds and you can choose from 5 transitions.

What is cool about the Aero is that you can also use it as a wireless router. Once it is connected to the Wifi, you can setup the Aero's WiFi pass thru. Actually you should do this as your device cannot connect to the internet unless you enable this feature. Any of your WiFi devices can connect to the Aero and connect to the internet. The maximum is 8 devices. I did a speediest comparing my home WiFi and the Aero pass thru. My home WiFi clocked at 21.5 Mbps download and 3.79 Mbs upload. Aero is slower at 12.5 Mbps but has the same speed in terms of upload speed at 3.81 Mbps upload. You can also upload contents of your IOS devices from your album or even Instagram. I transferred some videos and pictures by pressing the plus sign on the upper right of the Patriot app. Unfortunately uploading is limited on IOS devices, but you can do more with files using an android device.

Overall, the Aero is an amazing device. It can also be very useful specially when traveling and need to share memory space. For example, you can store photos from each other's camera and access them later, wirelessly, on each person's devices at once. The only thing I can think of surpassing this concept is by using solid state drive - of course for now the cost is a limiting factor.
