G-Technology G-DRIVE ev 1TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive for G-DOCK ev (0G02723) Review

This is a nice, small enclosure for HGST's Travelstar 1TB 7K1000 disk with 32MB cache. The GDrive ev can be used stand-alone with an USB3 cable, like the one provided, or with the G-DOCK ev with Thunderbolt via the SATA connection which has two docking ports and can be set to RAID 0 or 1 or just used as a bunch of disks. I have found my GDrive ev also works perfectly well with the Seagate Seagate Backup Plus Desk Thunderbolt Adapter with my Retina MacBook Pro. Testing with Xbench shows the speed of the G-Drive ev is excellent, best with the Thunderbolt adapter, but almost as fast with USB3. Also backward compatible with USB2.

The G-Drive ev has no visible screws. There is not an obvious way to open the drive enclosure if you wanted to swap in an SSD SATA disk. G-Technology should probably make this enclosure available with SSDs. Also an open bare option would be nice for people who want to pick a different 9mm drive.
