Product Description
Central Recharge Station for Multiple iPads. Fast charge, full power for all.Kanex Sydnee 4-port 2.1A USB Charging Station for iPad, Kindle, Tablets, Smartphones - Onyx Review
Every iOS device you get will come with a charger. Don't want to use 4 different outlets for 4 different devices? Well, for under $20, you could create your own charging solution: buy a surge protector power strip, plug in all your chargers, and you're good to go.So, why spend well north of $100 for this recharge station? Presumably, for the looks I guess. The main photo for the product looks pretty slick, with a bunch of iPads neatly held together by this "station". Take a minute to enjoy that photo. All the iPads seem nice and cozy, with the charging cables neatly looped in unison. Beautiful, isn't it?
Here are some points to consider:
1) The "fit": The truth is, this is just a stand that holds 3 iPads...nothing snug about it. One iPad rests in a holder on the outside of the stand, and the other two are more enclosed within a "loop". I have an iPad 3 with a thin keyboard case. This was too thick to fit the inside...it needed to use the outside holder. My wife has an original iPad with the standard case from Apple. It fit in any of the slots. The point is this: if you have multiple iPads WITH cases, you might find that you have to remove one or two of them from their cases in order to get them to fit in this stand.
2) The construction: When I removed the stand from the packaging, I found that there was a rubber pad that had fallen off, exposing the screws that held the stand together. It was clear that this pad was just glued on, and that the glue did not hold very well. I used a little Elmer's glue to put it back together again, and it seems like it is holding OK so far. But if you are going to charge over $100 for a "pretty" charging solution, at least find a better way to put it together than with glue that won't withstand shipping.
3) The charging: Well, it charges. There are 4 USB ports on this thing. This implies that you could use it to charge a lot of different kinds of devices, both iOS and non-iOS. Each port offers 2.1 amps. As long as that's appropriate for your device (and I assume that it probably is), this device will work. Side note: the station had 4 USB ports, and it is shipped with 3 iOS USB cables. Why not include the 4th cable?
4) The "design": This seems to be the reason Kanex believes they can charge so much for this recharge station...aesthetics. Basically, you will pay 6 or 7 times the cost of a decent power strip, all for the sake of having something that looks "pretty". I will say that the design is nice. This doesn't take up too much space on my desk. But, then again, neither would 3 iPads sitting on top of one another.
5) The cost: In case you haven't figured this out already, this recharge station is overpriced. Even at half the cost, it would be overpriced. A lot seems to have gone into the marketing for this thing. The photos are nice, the packaging is nice, the plastic on the stand is shiny and pretty. In the end, though, it's just a fancy looking power strip. Nothing more.
