HP Procurve 1810G-8 Switch Review

The HP Procurve 1810G-8 switch gives you enterprise-class functionality in a tiny, energy-efficient footprint. HP's documentation for the unit is very sparse (hard to find even the product via HP's website, and had to use documentation from the 24-port unit to get port-trunking configured). The web interface is very spartan, which is good in that it's uncluttered, but not so good in that help is not exactly one mouse-click away. For example, every web interface page has these three links: Refresh | Support | Logout. Refresh refreshes the page (helpful if you want to see statistics or status updated). Logout logs out of the admin interface. But support goes to the home page of HP's general support portal. Good luck from there! Rather it should send a smart cookie to HP's website which will say "aha! You are coming in from the Port Trunking page of the HP 1810G-8 switch...here's the PDF or HTML you really want to see!" If that worked, I'd have give it a full five stars.

Nevertheless, for the price (which is amazing), and the functionality (which is very advanced), it's a fantastic way to step up to high-end switch functionality without spending $$,$$$ on proprietary gear. For you open source fanatics, the switch does not run Linux, but does run eCos, a byte-sized embedded kernel and runtime environment. Very nice! I also have to say that [...]earns a good vote for their shipping service. I ordered the unit with expedited shipping late Wednesday evening, and the unit was on my doorstep on Friday. Not bad at all!
