LaCie 2TB Cloudbox (9000343) Review

I got this as a Christmas gift and was excited about having a lot of networked storage at my disposal. I love dropbox but only have a small amount of space and didn't want to pay a monthly fee for storage. Hooking up this drive was easy, it was plug and play to get it going on my router. Setting up remote access was difficult as there were some router settings that weren't configured correctly and I had to manually change numerous settings on my dsl modem and wireless router. Using the drive is pretty straightforward, it pops up as a drive under the "network" on my windows PC. One big gripe I had about the cloudbox is their misleading advertising on their website. It claims on the page that sharing files with others is easy through secure download links. This is a feature of dropbox that I used a lot and was excited to have that option with my entire library on my networked drive. There is no documentation in the manual about how to do this, and after speaking with lacie, they told me it was not possible to do with the cloudbox. I pointed out that it's listed as a feature of the cloudbox on their site, they apologized and said they would have their marketing dept look into it, but as of this review it's still listed as a feature. The remote access app on my iphone does connect to the cloudbox, but even over lte it is painfully slow. Bottom line is that it does offer a lot of networked storage that I can share with my family, but the features are limited and the iphone app looks and performs half-baked. If the software for the lacie cloudbox had it functioning the same way that dropbox works, I wouldn't hesitate to give it 5 stars.
