Toshiba Satellite L855D-S5139NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Fusion Finish in Mercury Silver) Review

Processor - 5+
Display - 4
WiFi Connector - 3
Ports - 5
Keyboard - 3 (Well, sort of...)
Touch Pad - 1 (Ugh!!!)

Overall - 3 1/2

I have owned this computer for a year now.

This was my very first personal Laptop, so naturally I was most excited. Siblings are geeks and know quite a bit about computers, so I had consulted them first on which one I should get. I had wanted a multi-threading capable computer because I work with Multi-media, but didn't want the i5 because of constant processing speed issues. It was the i7 or nothing for me... Then I found out about the a8 processor (AMD's version of i7-i5) and did my research on it. The one in this computer is most excellent. Graphic's card came with, and I have no need to upgrade it. Perhaps if I were a hardcore gamer, but it is strong enough to support all Steam games and the occasional Civ 4 world domination. It's multi-threading is beautiful and seemless. Computer is rarely slow except for the initial boot and power-down. There are no complaints there.
(5 star for processor and computer speed)

The display is decent. Not terrible, but at certain angles, there is no true color. Understandable, most computers are like that. But as the light in the room changes, you have to adjust your screen. A minor problem, but if you are watching a movie, it is rather annoying.
(4 star for display)

I do have an issue with my WiFi. Each and every time I open my computer, I have to re-log into my network. (Yeah, my network is slow, but it's not network issues here. Anywhere I go, I have this problem) It is partially because of the firewall, but even when I turn it off, it takes a full three minutes to get back on. My WiFi speeds are fast, no issues there. It does it's job. It's just the initial boot that kills me. Minorly annoying, but I have grown used to it. However, when I upgrade my computer, it will not be missed. One bit.
(3 star for WiFi)

Keyboard is rather funky... If you like your F keys, as most people do, don't get it. Each time you want to use it, you must hit the blue FN key AND THEN the F key and most of the time it won't register this. Especially if you are in game (Dota 2, Skyrim, etc...) Or if you hit the FN key on accident and then space, it zooms the screen in by quite a bit. A tad annoying and would rather not have this function. I want my F keys back... I do like the ability to change the sound easily though (over my f9 and f10) and play/pause/next track are quite handy. Just poorly placed.
(3 star, because no sticky key issues)

USB ports are nice. I have one on the left and two on my right. They work well, no issues so far. The SD port is a great feature. Works fantastically and still remains relatively dust-free. I mainly use it for picture-pulling.
(5 star for ports and SD slot)

No... My beef is mostly with my touch pad...

Ever since I first turned it on, there has been and issue with it. I can have my hand COMPLETELY off the mouse pad and it will jiggle all over the screen! It was hilarious at first, but not anymore! I fight with that mouse pad every time I need to do some precision clicking (i.e. ALL THE TIME) I want to go left and it wants to just sit there. If I go up, it goes right. If I accidentally start on the right side of my touch pad and go left, it zooms in on my browser screen and I have to reset it all over again. No, I cannot function on this computer without some sort of a mouse to free me.

I have tried re-installing the mouse driver and to no avail. It seems to be the touch pad itself. Even though this may have just been a manufacture's defect (I doubt it, because of the texture on the touch pad... rather poor quality), it greatly displeased me.

!!!(1 star for Mouse Pad)!!!

So again, you have to use some sort of a mouse for this. Mouse works just fine! But not the touch pad. No sir.

I would recommend this to someone else. I got it at a good deal, works just fine. I just hate the touch pad. And I can live with that...

Thanks, Ya'll!
