Qnap Network Storage Server (TS-879U-RP-US) Review

I find the product lacking in its redundancy feature set and customer support. This comes from first hand experience during the failure of a drive in the QNAP TS-879U-RP, 8 drive product, in January 2013.

I am writing to update this review in May 2013. The issues are not solved. In addition, what I had believed to be a VMWARE VMOTION issue, VMWARE has been able to reproduce and has communicated the problem is with QNAP firmware issue that isn't solved.

QNAP is just an extremely poor choice for supporting VMWARE.

More about the lacking redundancy features ...

On the failure of a single drive in a 8 drive RAID 6 configuration, all the virtual machines on the two connected Dell servers failed. During the failure the console did not operate correctly, for example would not perform a soft reset, requiring us ultimately to have to pull the power cords to reset. We also found an anomaly between the logs and the console display. We faced anomalies during the drive rebuild process as well.

Contacting QNAP for support has yielded no progress on these issues. All we have from 2 weeks of seeking assistance, is affirmation that we needed to replace a failed drive. Pao from customer support refuses to respond to our complaint that QNAP doesn't continue to operate on a failed drive, a basic feature. We also could not get a response to why the rebuild process of a drive was starting back at 0% a couple of times during the rebuild process on a new drive.

I escalated the problem to customer support, and have no response in a full week.

See the ridiculous email thread below. Wei is our director of IT, Pao is the support employee of QNAP.

I have invested in the high reliability end of the QNAP product line and am not entertained when I look thru the email trail between you and Wei, that our concerns are not being addressed.

I am looking for a customer service vice president to which I will loudly complain that our issues are not being addressed, and insist they engage the necessary engineering resources before the holiday in Taiwan is in full swing.

Are you the person who will get knowledgeable people from the engineering group involved and work with my people as the day starts in Taiwan, or do I need to get to a vice president level ?

Hi Wei,
Sorry to get back to you so late. So they looked at the logs and it had alot of errors coming from drive 7 and alot of unexpected shutdown. In general, degraded mode should still make the iscsi available and not take it down.

Hi, Pao,
It has been a few days and I want to follow up on this issue. Did you hear anything from Engineers in Taiwan? We replaced drive 8 eventually and QNAP is back to normal mode now. However, I am still down lots of pressure to investigate this issue. So if you haven't heard anything, would you please ask them and hopefully escalate the issue to higher priority?
Thanks!
Wei
