The Mantis Support Arm is a unique pedestal stand that can configure itself into hundreds of viewing positions, inclines and angles. From as low as ground level up to 52" in height. The Mantis's flexibility is due to its three-sectioned pedestal with locking hinge joints that create the multiple configurations.

The Mantis Support Arm has four base legs that provide secure stability. The unit comes in a rigid plastic carrying case for ease of transport and is equipped with an Aluminum mouse pad measuring 7 inches by 7-1/2 inches.

The Mantis Support Arm can support weights up to 40 lbs. depending on the severity of the angle and degree of articulation. The Mantis Notebook Arm is made of Aluminum with long lasting chrome-plated steel hinge joints and gears. Each pedestal section is 16" long between the hinges. The two front base legs are 23-3/8" long while the rear base legs are 6-3/4" long. The unit weighs 7.5 lbs. and requires some minor assembly. The four base legs need to be screwed into the base knuckle.

This product is exactly what I needed. I can now work on the couch with the leg rest extended for a much longer period of time than just the laptop on my lap. I’m clocking in my 5th hour as I type this review. I am extremely impressed. However it was not without considerable effort.

Issue 1 – the legs are angled 90 degrees apart. When the arm is angled to extend beyond the hypotenuse (sorry it was the best word I can find) it would tip over. Without a laptop it stood fine, but once the weight is attached it would not stand without a counter weight. Luckily I had a dead 40 pound UPS that I placed on the back shorter legs. Seems like this issue could be solved if there was a mechanism to allowing the legs to angle inward. Next iteration perhaps.

Issue 2 – 3 joints = a hell of a lot of angles. It took about 4 to 5 hours spread over 2 days before I found the optimum angles to tighten the joints. The stand sags a good 2 to 3 inches when my laptop is attached. There is no way to adjust the stand with the laptop attached, very hard to hold the joints in the desired angle before you can tighten the handles. Be prepared for a long, long, LONG extended set up period of trial and error before finding the optimum locking positions for your use position. Once you find it, you are golden.

Small Issue 211; The tube arms are attached to the joints via some screwed on joint mechanism. When you move the stand out of the way to get up it would actually rotate loose. With enough swinging outward the whole assembly starts to destabilize. I went out and got some locktit to fix that issue.

Don’t use this on carpet! The rig is very rigid once you find the optimum adjustments. It’ll be very hard to move this out of the way to get up without damaging the joints. I had it on a rug and it was not very agile to get up, once I had it on the hard wood floor and with locktit you can slide the assembly out of the way to get up.

The only way this product could be improved is if the joints used those quick release lever type instead of the current twist handles. This would first fix the top twist arm which could only be rotated if the laptop mounting bar is perpendicular to the joint. Also quick release locks would make adjusting much easier as the locking would be instantaneous instead of the currently wobbly instability until the joints reaches a certain tightness.

Still, not a bad buy at all. Make sure to have a counter weight handy if you want to work on the couch, with the leg rest extended with a Macbook Pro 15 inch retina.
