Warpia StreamHD Mac Edition Wireless USB PC to TV Display Adapter (Silver/Black) Review

Yes, corny as the review title is, I mean it. As Director of IT for a business, I was tasked with finding a solution to present laptop content on our nice new TVs. Problem is there are a multitude of solutions, varying in price and quality. I tested three: Barco, WIPS, and Warpia. I looked at the Netgear Push2TV, but discounted it as it only works with specific network protocols.

Barco is the standout here. One-click dongles that allow for 4 laptops to display simultaneously. Very slick and nice looking. Connect the wireless device to the TV. Plug a USB dongle into laptop/MAC, do a quick (and I do mean quick) install of the software... voila. Click the button on the dongle... your laptop displays. Issue was cost: ~$4,000 per unit (includes 4 dongles). But Barco gets the nod for best-looking and easiest to use.

WIPS costs ~$1,000. You connect the wireless router device to your TV; it broadcasts its own wireless SSID. Connect a laptop to that SSID, enter the code displaying on the TV screen... voila. Your laptop displays. Issue here is once connected to that wireless, you can't browse the Internet. There are work arounds, like a network cable to the network, etc., but wasn't the whole point to connect without cables? But WIPS gets a nod for ease-of-use and much lower cost.

Then there's Warpia. You connect the wireless router device to your TV. You install sofware on the laptop (Mac or PC); reboot the laptop. Plug the USB antenna device into the laptop, wait for the drivers to install. Click on the Warpia desktop icon to connect... Voila. Your laptop displays. (You might need to reboot a second time.) A bit more work up front, but then the kicker is the ~$150 price tag. We're installing the software on all our user's laptops so we don't need to worry about the installation. So to display their laptops all our users need do is plug in the wireless USB antenna to the laptop... and they're displaying. One caveat... you need the right TV display for this to work; some of our TVs did not recognize the HDMI input. However, our new Samsung 9000 series TV did... and boy is it ever beautiful. The Warpia plays video, with nearly no lag; sound comes from the TV! That was pretty cool. I've ordered 5 more for other offices. This gets the Holt Editor's Choice award for quality/price combo.
